Overview

"New Directions in Sex Therapy: Innovations and Alternatives focuses on cutting-edge, therapy paradigms as alternatives to conventional clinical strategies. With each passing year the treatment of sexual problems seems to emphasize more medical and pharmacological interventions. There is correspondingly less interest in the experiences of the individuals or couples involved. The present volume expands the definition of our field. Part I highlights the major problems and criticisms facing sex therapy and furnishes a rationale for new directions. Included in this new edition are critiques of ""sexual addiction"" nomenclature, the neglect of the ethical dimension in sex therapy and there is a call to expand our vision of what sex therapy can attain. Part II demonstrates new approaches to dealing with traditional sex therapy concerns, (e.g., lack of desire, erectile dysfunction) as well as innovative goals, such as integrating sexual medicine with sex therapy; using client feedback to customize therapy for the particular individual/couple's best interests; promoting relationship growth in working with transgender clients; and transcending sexual function to optimize erotic intimacy in long-term couples. This 2nd edition of New Directions in Sex Therapy: Innovations and Alternatives is replete with helpful new clinical illustrations which demonstrate these approaches in action. This book is intended for anyone who deals with sexual issues and concerns in therapy-- clinicians of every kind, novices and advanced practitioners--rather than only those who define themselves as sex therapists."

Reviews

Praise for the Previous Edition Kleinplatz and her chapter authors have moved the field ahead by a quantum leap with their perceptive insights into the nature of human sexuality. - Stanley Krippner, PhD, Saybrook Graduate School; Founding Clinical Fellow, American Academy of Sexologists I enjoyed every word of this book, from the theoretical underpinnings to the practical applications to the terrific case illustrations...It was like attending a state-of-the-art therapy conference...Peggy Kleinplatz and the authors she brought together are united in their call for a less mechanistic approach to sex therapy, for more emphasis on intimacy and relational sex, and for caution about unexamined pharmaceutical intervention. I want every sex therapist to read this book and then pass it on to their colleagues. - Ellen Cole, PhD, Alaska Pacific University, Anchorage, Alaska New Directions in Sex Therapy provides a unique contribution of alternative approaches to sex therapy. The various authors offer a holistic approach to sexual health and see therapy from diverse perspectives. A must-read for all who deal with sexual concerns of clients. - Beverly Whipple, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; Past President, American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists New Directions in Sex Therapy is not just a rehash of traditional sex therapy techniques. Rather, based on the experiences and wisdom of both experienced sex therapists and psychotherapists with other backgrounds, it provides innovative ways for the therapists to help clients deal with their sexual concerns and to achieve their sexual potential. - Sandra Byers, PhD, Professor of Psychology, University of New Brunswick, Canada It is time to rethink our approaches to sexuality and sex therapy. This book leads the way and does it well.
