NanoPDT: Nanomaterials-Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy

Overview

NanoPDT: Nanomaterials-Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy covers extensively the therapeutic potential of multifunctional nanosystems that has made so much progress within the biomedical and pharmaceutical research communities over recent decades. Traditional photodynamic therapy (PDT), however, faces several limitations, primarily due to the hydrophobic nature of photosensitizers (PS), which tend to aggregate in aqueous environments, resulting in inadequate biodistribution and limited bioavailability. These constraints significantly reduce the efficacy of photodynamic therapy. The book also explores the most relevant combination therapies available. Four chapters are dedicated to the combination of NanoPDT with other approaches like Immunotherapy, Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and photothermal therapy. NanoPDT: Nanomaterials-Enhanced Photodynamic Therapy is an essential resource for pharmaceutical researchers, clinicians, and students in the fields of nanomedicine, oncology, and photodynamic therapy. It offers a thorough exploration of the latest advancements and future directions, providing valuable insights for those looking to enhance the efficacy and specificity of PDT through nanotechnology and its combined applications. The book's comprehensive coverage of both oncological and non-oncological applications makes it a crucial addition to the literature, bridging the gap between fundamental research and clinical practice.

Author Information

Saeid Moghassemi is a dedicated professional who has passionately pursued his education in the field of biomedical engineering. He earned both his BSc and MSc degrees in biomedical engineering-biomaterials from the prestigious Amirkabir University of Technology. In early 2020, Saeid embarked on a new academic journey, joining the Catholic University of Louvain to pursue his Ph.D. in Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences under the guidance of Prof. Christiani A. Amorim. Throughout his academic career, Saeid has demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing knowledge in his field. Saeid's research interests are diverse, with a primary focus on Novel Drug Delivery Systems, Bioprinting, Nanomedicine, and Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering applications. His work reflects a keen interest in pushing the boundaries of innovation within the intersection of engineering and healthcare. As a diligent researcher, Saeid has consistently demonstrated a high level of expertise and dedication to his chosen field. His academic achievements and research contributions showcase not only his proficiency in biomedical engineering but also his potential to make significant contributions to the scientific community. With a strong foundation in both academic and practical aspects of biomedical engineering, Saeid Moghassemi is poised to continue his journey as a dynamic professional, contributing valuable insights to the ever-evolving landscape of biomedical research. Ricardo Bentes de Azevedo is currently working in the Department of Genetics and Morphology, Institute of Biology, University of Brasília, Brazil, as an Assistant professor. Ricardo Bentes de Azevedo expertise in different fields like cancer, cancer cell biology, tumour. He has done 98 publications on his research works with 791 citations. Dr. Amorim holds a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine and a PhD in animal reproduction. For the past 20 years she has worked with follicles from a whole range of mammalian species. Initially, I focused on domestic animals, developing projects to safeguard native breeds from Brazil and Italy through the establishment of cryopreservation procedures for isolated follicles and ovarian tissue. Since 2007 I have been working with human preantral follicles. Her major goal is to create a transplantable artificial ovary to restore fertility in cancer patients. Additionally, she conduct studies on ovarian tissue characterization, cryopreservation and xenotransplantation.
