Overview

Once upon a time, pre-SCAD, pre-midnight, a young artist fell in love with Savannah and life was never the same. Robert moved with his bride Linda to the elegantly decrepit old city in September 1964. They'd barely heard of the place just a month before, but the offer of an entry-level managerial job with a fast-growing manufacturer of industrial chemicals was too good to turn down. So, sight unseen, the city became their first home as a couple. Exiles from the suburbs of a large industrial city, they arrived in the middle of a hurricane, and a drive through the historic city center convinced them that was where they wanted to live in spite of the real-estate agent and Robert's new co-workers telling them that no lives downtown. They moved into one of three apartments in a newly broken-up Victorian house on East GastonStreet and began at once to settle into a life centered around exploring their new surroundings. Good, bad, or indifferent, it was all fascinating and, together with their Siamese cat Max and beagle Plato, they realized in a very real sense that they'd come home. Robert's memoir is the story of their explorations and how the young artist fared in a corporate world that didn't know what to do with him. It's also the story of an unlikely friendship and its significance for the rest of their lives. Copiously illustrated with Robert's photography, paintings, and sketches, his recollections pull back the curtain on a window to a very different time.
