Overview

Little did Robin know that when he went to Lord Janney's home, Rafflesthorpe Hall, to earn some money, his life would change for ever. My North Star is, above all, a love story, but it is much more than that: family feuding; the reading of a will that surprises, angers, and amazes those involved; tenderness, laughter and great sadness. Through this weaves a memorable cast of characters: Lady Ruth the mistress of the Hall, unlikeable Aunt Veronica; the wise family solicitor and Robin's parents. His down-to-earth mother (the North star of the title) is a bringer of the good things in life in the form of food. An incidental delight of this page-turner of a novel is the detailed descriptions of the many meals. Do not read this on an empty stomach.

Author Information

Bob Partridge left school at fifteen with very little knowledge, except how to get on with life as he had managed to do most things for himself and he could hold his own with adults. He was taken on with Trust Houses hotels and was put through catering college to get his City and Guilds 147 and 152. Bob fell in love at the age of seventeen and he and his partner have just celebrated fifty-five years together. At twenty, with an interest in art, Bob started a gallery selling and restoring pictures and framing with his partner. Thirty years later, after having a very successful business, they retired to enjoy life together. A few years after retiring Bob started writing My North Star, followed by a children's story based on characters of vegetables on his allotment. He is now writing book two of Tales of Mossy Bank Allotment.
