Overview

The story of the hardships endured in China, Burma, and India... fighting the Japanese as well as battling snakes, insects, disease, hunger, headhunters, jungles, cruel mountains and bad weather. During World War II the news media carried heroic stories of great battles in Europe and the Pacific. Yet very little space was ever given to what was going on in the CBI region (China, Burma, India.) No one really understood how the Japanese planned to invade and conquer these countries, then eventually meet up with the Germans and other axis powers coming from the opposite direction. Little thought was given to the vast logistical problems of how to send supplies from the United States to these troops some 8,000 miles away. Flying over the Hump in the Himalayan Mountains cost us hundreds of planes and pilots. Fighting in the dense jungles also took a heavy toll, not just to the enemy, but to the many lethal snakes, leeches, insects and headhunters, just to name a few. In many ways it was much more brutal than fighting with guns, tanks, planes and ships. Another story that needs to be told is the plight of the millions upon millions of poor and hungry human beings in India fighting for scraps of food on the streets and in the garbage dumps, of the horrible sanitary conditions everywhere, the burning of the dead and the dumping of their bodies in the river. The list of miseries in the land of the Taj Mahal goes on and on. Edward G. Hardy is best qualified to address the above conditions--because he lived through them, and because he survived them. A young boy from Elkhart, Indiana gets swept up in a great global conflict and is sent half way around the world to fight an enemy he doesn't really understand, in a land he knows little about. But he grew up, he learned, he fought, and he came back home. Now he tells this fascinating tale of his experiences in World War II, set in one of the strangest places on Earth.
