Overview

In An Everyday Miracle, doctor Jim Dornan gives a unique insight into the world of pregnancy, giving birth and women’s health. Drawing on his forty-year career as an obstetrician and gynaecologist, he talks openly and controversially about working in a busy maternity unit, and about the immense joy, and sometimes heartbreak and loss, that women experience during pregnancy and birth. In an accessible way, the book covers subjects such as premature babies, miscarriage, the pros and cons of having a c section and PMS, as well as looking, sometimes humorously, at how things have changed for doctors and their female patients over the last fifty years. Taking up where Call the Midwife left off, An Everyday Miracle tells the extraordinary stories of mothers, babies and their care over the last half-century.

I found Prof Dornan's account of delivering babies from the 1970s ... all the way up to today a fascinating read. this book goes beyond medical jargon and looks at the emotions of different scenarios When you finish reading the book, you really have a sense that despite delivering in excess of 6,000 babies Prof Dornan still views every single birth as 'An Everday Miracle'. * Irish Independent * Professor Dornan chronicles the sad, the happy, the ordinary and the phenomenal * Irish News * he has managed the almost impossible, by writing a book which will be valuable to the profession and interesting to the general public - especially women, although men could learn a lot too * Irish News * a book full of nerve-jangling life-and-death drama spliced through with life lessons on the human condition -- Gail Walker * Belfast Telegraph * This is a beautiful book - heartwarming, heartbreaking and bursting with tenderness. * Dr Rhona Mahony * Dornan's new book, An Everyday Miracle, is actually a very upbeat account of his medical journey, littered with amusing anecdotes as well as real tear-jerkers. * Irish Times * An honest engaging account of the life's work of a kind, thinking and skilled obstetrician. -- Dame Lorna Muirhead Jim Dornan's real-life stories from the delivery frontline are moving and inspiring. -- Sarah Brown The complex medical and human dilemmas in these moving stories are explained with warmth and humour... Praise for An Everyday Miracle 'Jim Dornan is as well known as a master Irish storyteller as he is as a master obstetrician and gynaecologist. Mix those two qualities together, add a fascinating career as a caring and gentle doctor, and what you get are tales of the unexpected, told with humour and wisdom, around the joys and headaches that women go through in their reproductive lives.' Marcus Setchell, CVO, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, Surgeon-Gynaecologist to HM The Queen, 1990 - 2014 'An extraordinary selection of poignant stories collected over forty years of frontline experience by a man whose admiration and empathy for women and their ability to cope with life, love and loss during pregnancy and childbirth, shines through. The complex medical and human dilemmas in these moving stories are explained with warmth and humour, making them easily understandable and accessible. You will be inspired by this book.' Lesley Regan, author of Your Pregnancy Week by Week 'This is the honest and engaging account of the life's work of a kind, thinking and skilled obstetrician. Jim Dornan is a doctor who has given so much to women and their families, whilst in return, he has taken time - as all of us engaged in childbirth must - to learn much from them.' Dame Lorna Muirhead, past President of the Royal College of Midwives 'This is a beautiful book - heartwarming, heartbreaking and bursting with humanity and tenderness. The women in this book are real women like you or me but their stories inspire us and remind that, however universal or fundamental, the birth of a baby is extraordinary. Wit, wisdom and a great deal of compassion allied with years of obstetric practice have allowed us this wonderful perspective on childbirth today.' Dr Rhona Mahony, Master of the National Maternity Hospital, Dublin 'Jim Dornan's working life has been dedicated to ensuring that the arrival of a new baby is the joy it should be, and his commitment as one of our country's leading obstetricians has been to avoid the tragedy of maternal death once so commonplace. His real-life stories from the delivery room frontline are moving and inspiring, and show just what a gift each healthy baby - and mum - is.' Sarah Brown
