Steele was raised in southern Georgia and attained a degree from the University of Georgia in business administration. He earned a masters in international relations from George Washington University. During his 29 years in the U.S. Army, he commanded troops up to division level, saw combat in Vietnam, held many staff/instructor positions and attained the rank of major general. He received numerous decorations and awards. Upon retirement from the Army, he began a second career with Aflac, eventually retiring as Senior Vice President for International Operations. He still maintains contact with the Army and is president of the National Infantry Association. Virginia, his wife of 54 years, died in 2003.
