Overview

It's Florence, Italy, where he spent time in his youth; now he is back, this time desperately searching for his estranged daughter. He is haunted by his memories of that fascinating Italian girl, a long-lost love, and also by a trip to Italy with his children, another reminder of happier times, all in the distant past. Complicating things even further, as he struggles to make sense of his own inadequacies and failures, amidst the chaos that now defines his life, he meets a striking American girl in Florence seeking inspiration for a novel. Will he find his daughter? Can he repair his shattered life? My Italian Girl, often humorous, occasionally heartbreaking, is a literary novel about chiaroscuro, the contrasting of bright light and dark shadows--not so much on the canvasses painted by him, himself an artist, but, rather, in his life and in the lives affected by him.

Author Information

Like the protagonist of his debut novel, My Italian Girl, DD Teller, when attending college, studied art, architecture, and Italian Renaissance literature in Florence, Italy. Unlike his protagonist, he did not then actually fall in love with an Italian girl, though he did fall in love with Italian cuisine. He takes pride in being taller in person than he is in real life. Teller's writing best is described as illegible, but his books are typed.
