My Friend Leaf

Overview

'My Friend Leaf' Mum walks her son to school, goes past nice houses and cars. They don't have a car so they have to walk everywhere. The boy is new to the school so not familiar with the school and shy in his demeaner. Boy doesn't have any friends but walking through the school gate he sees this perfect shiny green leaf laying on the ground. He thinks to himself (In thought bubbles) ""I will be your friend today; will you be mine?"" He sits in the classroom at his desk with his friend leaf sitting proudly next to his name tag. The leaf is giving the boy a sense of comfort and puts a smile on his face. For lunch break the boy takes the leaf to play with, he props it up in the sand pit and talks to it in his head/imagination (In speech bubbles) 'What should we build today, a road or a castle? The math's lesson for the day is symmetry. The young boy shows the class how the Leaf's symmetry is perfect. The symmetry lesson on the white board shows the illustrations of butterflies, shells, leaves and trees portraying how there is a number of examples of symmetry in nature. At the end of the day the Mum is at the gate waiting in anticipation for her little man, hoping he had had a good day at school. In his imagination he is thinking about the friendship qualities the leaf has given him. The leaf is reliable, a good listener and doesn't judge him for who he is or what he doesn't have. A friend comes in all shapes and sizes. All you need are curious open eyes. When you feel lonely look to nature for a friend. Whether it is a pet rock, a stick, a gum nut, a sea shell, or a chest nut. It is up to your imagination! Connection is everywhere. Even as adults we are told to put a little rock or memento in our pocket and every time you put your hand in your pocket you hold it and you tell yourself what you are grateful for. Because there is always something to be grateful for! Target Market for My Friend Leaf would be school age group; 6-9-year-olds. Also, for a teacher who is introducing symmetry to a class. A child who is new to Australia, new to a school or starting something new like joining a team where they may not know anyone.

Author Information

A little bit about me; As a person who has an abundance of maternal warmth, who dreamed of growing up to be Mary Poppins one day and has had years of time with children; I want to write stories and share my experiences, love and warmth through story time. My Friend Leaf is my first story to submit for publication. My world has been filled with little people from babysitting as a teenager, being an AuPair in Connecticut, USA to having my very own cherubs; 2 boisterous boys and 1 neurodiverse little girl. All the little people who have crossed my path have filled my heart with love, wonder and hope. Looking for work that didn't take me away from my family, my parrot umbrella landed me in a local school as a Student Learning Support Officer where I have been for 11 years. When playground duty comes around, I have a floral fabric bag (similar to the carpet bag that Mary Poppins had) full of toys, tricks and band aids just to brighten anyone's day. Never wanting to be a teacher as I feel that they are the conductor of a child's day at school, I wanted to be and feel that I am the Mary Poppins that makes everything at school have an element of fun! In addition to working as a Student Learning Support Officer, I am very blessed to work in the school library as a Library Assistant for 4 years. In that time, I have read stories, shared stories and introduced little people to the wonders of reading. During last year I volunteered at a local Public Library and assisted with Baby Rhyme Time. Taking my children to rhyme time was always a relief to get out of the house and have some adult company. As a parent I found it hard to find the right words to explain things to my children and quite often I would turn to books. Books about emotions, families and life lessons helped in a subtle way get my point across to my children. There are many ideas I have drafted that I want to turn into stories to share. The experiences I have had in life have left imprints of words in my mind that are now coming together as stories. I have never felt I have had the confidence, knowledge or understanding how to venture down the publishing path.
