Overview

"Lewis and Muriel Glaser met in Jackson Heights, New York, when he was sixteen and she was fourteen. They fell in love and remained dedicated to each other forever after. Lew was in college when WWII began and when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Soon after, he left college and attended radio school for a year, in preparation for joining the Army Signal Corps. In 1943, Lew, not yet twenty years old, registered for the army and left his life in New York and his one and only love, Muriel. The military took him all over the country and eventually the world, where he fought in the European Theater Operations and served in the occupying force in Japan after the war. Lew never wanted to leave Muriel, but he was proud to serve his country. To keep their love burning and to keep himself sane during his army years from 1943 to 1946, Lew wrote to Muriel almost daily (""[Your letters] lift me right out of my room and carry me to your side, living your life with you - for a few moments anyway.""), and Muriel kept these handwritten letters her whole life. The letters paint the picture of a courageous, intelligent, and humor-loving soldier and give us insight into the life and times, the war, and military life from the standpoint of a soldier whose love always burned strongly for his ""Darling Angel."""

Reviews

Dr. Charles McQueen, a career army doctor at Walter Reed Medical Center, said that Lewis Glaser's letters and perspective are unique in that most write-ups about this type of army training come from a higher-level commanding officer. This is some good stuff! Either you are a good interpreter, or your father-in-law had excellent penmanship and was a good writer, or a combination of both! Further, he said that he learned from the letters about the preparations for the invasion of the Japanese islands during WWII using amphibious landings, which were far more complicated than is intuitive, and the preparations must have been grueling and exhausting.

Author Information

Andrea Glaser lives in Olney, Maryland, with her husband, Larry. Although Andrea and Larry grew up in New York, much of the extended Glaser family now lives in Maryland, as did Andrea's father-in-law, Lewis Glaser, later in his life. Andrea doesn't consider herself a history buff, but she is definitely a fan of great stories, romance, and strong family bonds. She is very thankful to have married into such a loving family in 1984 and to have had the opportunity to help carry forward the Glaser surname with two sons, Aaron and Philip. Andrea had a long career as a technology director for a major corporation and is now continuing her life-long interest in music by teaching young students to play the piano.
