OverviewA PRACTICAL HANDBOOK FOE EVERYONE WHO HAS A BANKING ACCOUNT. BY J. GEORGE KIDDY Antkor of The Country Sankttr Sandbwk cj. LONDON WATBRLOW AND SONS LIMITED, LONDON WALL. 1909. I. HONR LIHITBM, PREFACE. OOME fifteen years ago the writer compiled, largely from notes of correspondence passing between the London Head Office and its branch banks, a small volume entitled The Country Bankers Handbook, intended for the especial use and guidance of those for whom it was principally prepared. The fact that it has since that time had a continuous sale, and is now in its fifth edition, emboldens the writer to hope that the present work, which, in its turn, has also been largely put together from notes of correspondence and other items of business daily occurring between banks and their customers and others, may prove of service to the general public to whom it is addressed. It does not pretend in any sense to be legal or even technical, except in so far as it is r e to translate what may be included in those ex sions into the more common and easily understood j ctice of banking. While it is the writers earnest desire that the book may be intelligible to the veriest novice into whose hands it may come, he trusts that it will also be found of service to Yl PEEFACE. titie best informed upon such matters as the book deals with. Nor again is it the intention to give the rules and practice of any one bant in particular, but rather the methods and procedure of banks in general. It may not be out of place here to state that yet one other object which the writer had in view was to combat to some extent the reprehensible tone of writing on banking subjects which was somewhat in vogue a few years ago, when thenotes for this book were in an early stage. This fashion has long since died out, and reference to it now would be out of place were it not that one sincerely desires, by way of contrast to the manner in which practices and tricks of bankers were then discussed, to shew a truer picture of the relations between banks and their customers. Need less to say, a great deal of the stuff then written could not be takefi seriously nevertheless, one is reminded of the old adage that when mud is thrown some must stick. No high end or useful purpose can ever be served by see. g to bring into conflict those who have such vital and erdependent relations as bankers and their customers. It is hoped, therefore, that the following pages will bring out in some way the vast interests that are served for customers and the general public, the frequently gxatuitous and onerous services PREFACE. Til which are performed, with the many risks and responsi bilities undertaken, by those who faithfully fulfil the calling of a banker. Just a brief word may be offered by way of explana tion of the title. There are others that would possibly have been more appropriate, and less suggestive of a work of fiction. It may, however, be said that such titles as Banker and Customer have had the changes fairly rung upon them, and it can at any rate be claimed that the one selected has the merit of bringing the personal element into prominent relief.
