Murder In Ice

Overview

Murder in Ice is a chilling Christmas murder mystery from Lapland. It was a best-seller in Finland, when it was first published in 2023 as an ""Advent Calendar Mystery"". Readers were sent a chapter a day in count-down to Christmas by streaming platforms Book Beat and Storytel. Now in English, Murder in Ice is a gripping 25-chapter page-turner, which you can read as an Advent Calendar - or as a ""normal"" crime novel any time of the year. It's December in snowy Lapland, and the Northern Lights shimmer across the sky. The Polar Night has settled in ‒ the darkest time of the year, when the sun barely rises above the horizon. And a murderer is on the loose. Criminal investigator Saana Valkeapää is helping her family launch a new course centre. But the first course ‒ a workshop on building a traditional shaman drum ‒ is abruptly disrupted when a body is discovered. The murder sends shock waves through the tight-knit community and plunges the case into a world of mysticism, ancient beliefs, and tangled relationships. The course participants form a colourful and intriguing group: shaman Bigga Sarre, criminal psychologist Antti Honkanen, Kenyan folklore researcher Saed Semeko and many more. Detective Inspector Heikki Tuunanen is brought in to support the overstretched Lapland police. Together with local officer, Kuura Jänkälä, he begins to unravel a deeply complex mystery. Suspects abound - and a persistent rumor claims the killer may not be human at all, but the mythical flesh-eating wolf, Stállu.

Reviews

These reviews are from 2023, when Murder in Ice was first published in Finland as an 24-part Advent Calendar book in streaming services. One chapter was sent to readers 1-24 December, in count-down to Christmas. Later the book was published as a whole book. Book blogger About.jenni.h, 16.1.2023 ""Murder in Ice is a good example of a traditional Finnish detective story. I really liked the book's colorful and authentic cast of characters and its surprising plot. The information about the Sámi culture and myths was interesting, and Lapland is such an exciting and magical place. Kaarina Griffiths knew how to create a great atmosphere amidst roar of the wolfs, the Northern Lights and witch drums."" Heni´s book circle, 20.1.2023: I waited for the Advent Calendar, Murder in Ice, to open every morning like a child! Great idea to publish a book like this. When reading, you go through the characters one by one to see who it could be, and at the end the one you didn't suspect is revealed! The authos is playing the reader. Agatha Christie comes to my mind.
