Overview

Inviting students to assume the role of a lead investigator on a case, Murder at 144: Student Investigative File is an active problem-solving text containing hypothetical crimes and fact patterns. The opening section of the text describes a crime that has been called into the local police department. Students review crime scene illustrations, follow case updates, and use example legal documentation to build their case. The investigation culminates in a charge and other court-related outcomes that require the research of relevant case law. Throughout the text, students learn how to solve the crime while using appropriate investigative techniques and correct application of the law. Investigative updates and worksheets are included to help students organize and build their case while learning professional record-keeping and report writing skills. This affordable text/workbook helps students foster their knowledge of crime scene procedures, investigative techniques, interviews, subpoenas, probable cause, search warrants, complaints, arrest warrants, direct versus indirect evidence, plain view evidence, and more. Murder at 144: Student Investigative File is part of From the Files of Fanelli and Moscato: An Investigative Criminal Justice Series, a collection of scenario-based textbooks and active learning materials that help students cultivate critical thinking and investigative skills while applying their knowledge of key criminal justice principles, techniques, and theories.

Reviews

Fanelli & Moscato's Murder at 144: A Student Investigative File has done a wonderful job of providing realistic, practical exercises in how to conduct criminal investigations for those aspiring to become law enforcement officers and criminal justice professionals. The thoughtfully laid out scenarios will test the intellect of the students while giving them guidance founded on sound legal principles and real-life experiences. By completing this immersive exercise, the students will learn 'real-life' applications of the legal concepts they have learned and give them a 'leg up' as they enter their criminal justice professions. -Lieutenant M. Bendul, Homicide Detective, F.B.I. Task Force Officer (Retired) (First, I want to reiterate) how valuable these workbooks are. They are a tremendous tool for students to have at their disposal, and I wish I had had something like this during my time in undergrad. There is only so much you can learn from a standard dated textbook. The basic curriculum gives the core foundation. These workbooks allow students to learn specifics of law enforcement rule and policy. They give real accounts of true experiences (they) might encounter in their careers once (they) get out into the field. They also allow the student to engage and challenge themselves on how they might approach a specific situation. (From a student's perspective) I found these enormously valuable and easy to work through but also challenging and thought provoking. As an individual in the current federal LE workforce, I found them accurate and articulate. After concluding each section, I couldn't find any stone unturned. (The authors) really covered all of the critical areas and elaborated on many different violations. [...] Very useful and articulate to the reader. [...] The (true-to-life) scenarios are excellent! [...] The specific documentation like the copy of subpoenas and bulleted interviews are great! [...] I have not come across anything even similar to these workbooks, and I find them both engaging and helpful. This would be a source of material, that as a student, I would keep to look back upon when beginning my career. -A recent graduate and present federal investigator
