He now works at Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center at Tsinghua University and serves as the chief scientist of National Key Basic Research (973) project. Professor Xu began to research photonic quantum memory in early 1990s. He is one of the main founders of the optical storage technology in China. He achieved multi-wavelength and multi-level optical memory and won the National Invention Award and National Science and Technology Progress Award. He has 63 Chinese invention patents and 2 United States patents, and two of them won China Outstanding Patent Award. He has published more than 240 articles and 6 monographs, in which ""Principles of optical storage systems design"", ""High-density optical memory"", “Super density and speed optical memory” won National Merit Book Award.
