Without your rights, you’re just a mujina, with no place to call your own and no laws to protect you. But if the laws don’t apply to you, you can do anything you want. You just need the skills to back it up. And if you’re really good, you can really make a killing. Rooftop culture might seem cool when you’re just watching clips on social media, but trying to live without your human rights is way worse than any dead-end job. You can’t rent an apartment, go to the clubs, or get any kind of legit employment. The only way to make it as a mujina is to get into the assassin biz, and that all but guarantees you an imminent expiration date. But with badasses like Ubume and Tenko to look up to as shining examples of mujina success, will Juno decide to give up her rights to get out of the daily grind?

Inio Asano, a bona fide earthling, was born in Ibaraki, Japan, in 1980. In 2001, his short story “Uchu kara Konnichiwa” (Hello from Outer Space) won the first Sunday GX Rookie Prize. Later, GX published his series Subarashii Sekai, available in English from VIZ Media as What a Wonderful World! His other works include Hikari no Machi (City of Light), Nijigahara Holograph, and Umibe no Onna no Ko (A Girl on the Shore), as well as solanin, Goodnight Punpun, available from VIZ Media. In 2024, his award-winning series Dead Dead Demon's Dedede Destruction, also available from VIZ Media, was adapted into an anime film.
