From 1994 till 2007, he was employed at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, where he was appointed curator of the Galerie der Gegenwart in 1997. Since 2007, Heinrich has been working as the Modern and Contemporary art curator at the Denver Art Museum. He is the author of numerous books and articles on 20th-century and contemporary art.
