The monarch butterfly, sometimes referred to as simply monarch, is also known as milkweed, wanderer, black-veined brown or common tiger depending upon the region in its range. It's a bell-weather pollinator and the insect's larvae feeds exclusively on milkweed plants. Its survival is threatened by certain insecticides which are widely used in crop areas to control pests and kill the milkweed as well. The eastern North American monarch population is noted for its annual late summer/autumn migration in which the monarchs in central and eastern United States and Canada travel thousands of miles to winter in Florida and Mexico. Monarchs west of the Rocky Mountains overwinter in California and Mexico. The male monarch is slightly larger than the female and wing markings are not as distinct or bold as in the female. The typical life cycle of the monarch is approximately 6-8 weeks. The viceroy butterfly is similar in color and markings, but is significantly smaller and has an extra black stripe across its hindwings.
