And see Experiment 319. Tillage. S 3, plowed three times, with intermediate harrowings. 349. Wheat, 1778. The clover leys, plowed once, with the skim plow. Some of the leys, especially those of two years old, were very grassv; and had they been plowed, in a slovenly manner, the manes of the plits would, before harvest, have matted the surface; the crop would, of course, have been injured, and the stubbles Jeft as green as leys; 'whereas, by burying. the soddy edges of the plits, they are, now, less grassy, than the leys were, before plowing. The additional expence is trifling: it cannot be moVe than half a horse's work, or ninepence, an acre. And there can be no risk in asserting, that burying the sod of a clover ley, for wheat, is most eligible management. It is true, that a good, or rather an excellent, plowman will plow flat beds, in such a manner, as to tuck in the sod without cutting it off; but the test plowman cannot lay up round ridges, in such a way, as will entirely answer the purpose of cutting off the soddy edge of the plit, and burying it, in the preceding plowfurrow. 349. I have not, from this year's management, found any reason to alter the resolutions I formed, last year, with respect to the wheat process; and I can only add, this year, In Future, I will not, be my plowman ever so excellent, plow a clover ley, for wheat, without burying the surface 350.
