He earned Master's degrees in Clinical Psychology and Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology summa cum laude from the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond.Trained as a cognitive-behavioral psychologist, his primary focus of treatment and writings has been in the field of trauma. He is widely regarded as an expert in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), having been a clinician, consultant, and trainer over the past 30 years.He is an internationally known speaker on various topics including child sexual trauma, marital issues, educational psychology, positive psychology, and spirituality. He has consulted with more than 100 businesses, law and medical practices, hospitals, and educational institutions throughout his career.
