Mimosas at Sunset

Overview

Sharon M. Carter's poems speak of a close attention to the world around her. She writes of a living, breathing otherness that feels like worship. There's a mystical thread throughout her work, while at the same time botany appears as a consultant. Science is this poet's first love, made clear in the carefully chosen facts that dance in and out of these incredibly lovely poems. -Pamela Moore Dionne, author of Paradox and Illusion and Taut Caesuras These spiky but tender poems grow from a complex root system slowly exposed as we read them. Describing the terror of a difficult childbirth, or commenting on a corrupt culture-tell me, when has money made anyone honest?-Carter uses myth and emotion to wrap us in a vine of beauty, memory, and brutal decay. Common flowers and vegetation become metaphors for larger concerns and expand our world exponentially. -Gayle Kaune, author of All the Birds Awake and Noise from Stars

Author Information

Sharon M. Carter was born in London following its devastation from WW2's Blitz. Her family left to find work in the north of England, settling in a Lancashire seaside resort. Part-time work was freely available, and her early jobs included ice cream seller, waitress, and postwoman. During these decades education was free and this proved pivotal in allowing her to graduate from Cambridge University with a medical degree. Originally trained as a family physician, she was a practicing psychiatrist for over thirty years. Sharon has lived in London (again), several locations around the UK, a short stint in Greece, and aboard ship as a staff member of the Semester at Sea. She once traveled overland to Nepal. After immigrating in the 1970s via Indiana, she moved to the Pacific Northwest to which she is more firmly attached than a limpet. A lifelong artist working in multiple media she currently devotes most of her time to writing, though there's a subtle interaction. Sharon is also the author of the poetry book, Quiver (Tebot Bach 2022). Ekphrastic Pastiche, a book combining poetry and original drawings, was released in 2024. She will always be indebted to the Hedgebrook Foundation for its generosity early in her writing career. The Jack Straw Writers program also provided guidance on presentation. She has co-edited an online literary magazine and helped run a reading series. Other roles have included, cyclist, mother, skier, adventure traveler, and backpacker. Visit Sharon online at SharonMCarter.com Lana Hechtman Ayers has shepherded over 150 poetry collections into print in her role as managing editor for three small presses. The Autobiography of Rain (Fernwood Press, 2024) is her most recent collection and she has poems appearing in numerous journals, such as The London Reader, Peregrine, and Comstock Review. She lives in Oregon, on the unceded lands of the Yaqo'n people, with her beloved husband and several adored fur babies. On clear, quiet nights she can hear the Pacific ocean whispering to the moon.
