OverviewPlease note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Millfield is a suburb, a little to the west of the centre of Sunderland. This station dates from the opening of the Pelaw to Sunderland and South Hylton metro extension in 2002, but stands on the alignment of the former Sunderland to Durham mainline that fell to the Beeching Axe in the 1960s. The Metro station is built on the site of the first Millfield station, south-east of Hylton Road, although it was later relocated on the north-west side of Hylton Road; that station closed in 1955, in advance of the line losing its passenger service.
