Overview

Michelle Jezierski's (b. Berlin, 1981; lives and works in Berlin) paintings unfurl simultaneous spaces that are awash in light. Contrasts between bright and dark and muted as well as lucent hues engender a singular atmosphere characterized by depth and dynamism. The artist is as invested in the perception of these constructed spaces as in the capaciousness of natural landscapes. In her paintings, luminous colors and geometric disturbances achieve shifting balances between the extremes of order and chaos, light and shadow, interior and exterior, structure and flux. Simultaneous Spaces, the artist's first comprehensive monograph, presents forty-five works painted between 2017 and 2022. Michelle Jezierski studied with Tony Cragg at the Berlin University of Arts and graduated from Val rie Favre's class in 2008. She also received a fellowship for a semester abroad at Cooper Union, New York, where she studied with Amy Sillman.

Author Information

Jurriaan Benschop is a Dutch writer and curator based in Berlin in Athens. His book Waarom een schilderij werkt was published in 2022 in Dutch; followed by the English edition Why Painting Works in Spring 2023. For his previous book Salt in the Wound he traveled across the European continent, to speak with leading contemporary artists about their work and artistic roots. In spring 2021 he worked as a writer in residence at Saari Residence in Finland. Kimberly Bradley is an art critic, culture writer, editor, educator, and moderator based in Berlin. When she writes, it's often-- but not always-- about art or the art world. Born in a California desert town and raised in northern Minnesota, she graduated from Middlebury College in 1990. After a half-decade in Hamburg and a decade in New York, she moved to the German capital in the early 2000s. Dr. Jeni Fulton is an art critic, editor and curator. She received her PhD in 2016, where she examined the impact of art criticism in the era of the internet. She is editor-in-chief of Sleek magazine, a quarterly Berlin-based art and fashion magazine. She has also published in Spike, Frieze, Apollo and the Randian, among others. She completed her Master's degree at the University of Cambridge and now lives and works in Berlin.
