Metabolism of Human Diseases: Organ Physiology and Pathophysiology

Overview

This second edition of the highly successful textbook Metabolism of Human Diseases expands on the role of key molecules in the human body and how their defective metabolism leads to common human diseases. This textbook integrates concepts from biochemistry, physiology and pathophysiology to provide a comprehensive overview of organ- and tissue-specific metabolism and signaling pathways that contribute to human diseases. The chapters focus on the metabolic processes of the main organs in the human highlighting on many diseases that are frequently diagnosed, have high mortality rates, and are costly to treat. As metabolic research continues to unveil critical insights into physiology and pathophysiology, this edition incorporates the latest findings to enhance our understanding of how defective metabolism and signaling pathways contribute to prevalent conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, depression, diabetes, food intolerance, heart failure, macular degeneration and cancer. Authored by over 100 international experts, it serves as a vital tool for anyone dedicated to understanding the complexities of human diseases through the lens of metabolism.  It not only provides a comprehensive resource on the metabolic mechanisms of diseases but also presents therapeutic strategies to combat them. Ideal for graduate students, postdocs, and scientists in metabolic research, biochemistry, and physiology, as well as physicians interested in molecular mechanisms of human physiology and disease.

Author Information

Prof. Eckhard Lammert is professor and head of the Institute of Metabolic Physiology at Heinrich-Heine University Düsseldorf. Since 2013 he also serves as the Director of the Institute of Vascular and Islet Cell Biology at the German Diabetes Center (DDZ). His research focuses on the interaction between organs and blood vessels, the onset of type II diabetes mellitus in connection with drug-based therapies and the cell-cell interactions in pancreatic islets and liver. His work has significantly advanced the knowledge on how vascular systems influence organ development, regeneration and function. For his work on type II diabetes mellitus Prof. Lammert received the Paul-Ehrlich-und-Ludwig-Darmstaedter-Young-Investigator-Award in 2008 and the Research Award of the Klüh Foundation in 2013.  Dr. Martin Zeeb has done his doctoral studies at the Institute of Metabolic Physiology, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany under the mentorship of Prof. Eckhard Lammert. His research focused on the mechanisms of blood vessel formation. He currently works as an editor at Springer Medizin.
