OverviewIn 1928, Vicki Bowen's mother, Mertie, was 10 years old. Early every Saturday morning, Mertie's father, Pop, drove from Kiro, Kansas, to Topeka, Kansas, to watch the train come rumbling into the depot. He adored trains! Pop took Mertie, her sister, Freda, and her two brothers, Adiel and Cayley, along with him. They were very excited to go and, like Pop, developed a love for trains that lasted for their entire lives. The engine they watched stop in Topeka, in 1928, was a steam engine. Once each year, the train was loaded with the Barnum and Bailey Brothers Circus. Mertie's Pop was a farmer and the family was quite poor. They did not have enough money to purchase tickets to see the circus, so they went to the depot in Topeka to watch the circus unload. After it had unloaded, the entertainers, workers, and animals paraded down Kansas Avenue, to the place where the circus was set up for the public to see. This book is an endearing story of Mertie's life growing up in 1928. It describes the family's trips to Topeka to see the train come roaring into the station. One day each year, the train brought the circus. The family watched as it unloaded. The story is told through Mertie's point of view and describes her emotions, thoughts and opinions as she viewed life as a 10 year old in 1928. Most events in the book did truly happen, as told to the author, Vicki Bowen, by her mother, Mertie. Adiel and Freda, also added imput to the story's creation.
