Overview

THEY WERE SENT TO KOREA to fight in old, rusty, Pershing tanks from the previous war. The men referred to them as General MacArthur's rolling junkyards. The tanks couldn't run for a mile without overheating so they traveled behind enemy lines on flat cars, by rail. There were no replace-ment parts, no repair crews, no am-munition for their worn-out weapons, radios that didn't work and dorms that had no beds but plenty of lice. They came from farms, small towns, big cities, all willing to risk everything for their country: their well-being, their sanity, their lives. Their coun-try should have provided them with the training, the equipment, and the weaponry to do the job. But as Stearns reveals in Memories from the Forgotten War, during the action in Korea, the Army, the generals, the strategists, and the tacticians, failed the fighting forces in every way. Harry Stearns is the kind of man Americans have always loved to cheer for--brash, quick-thinking, smart-al-ecky, wise-cracking, and unafraid. But as a result of the mistakes, fog of war, and high-level bungling, Harry and his fellow soldiers were overrun by the enemy, captured, interrogated, and beaten. In the end they escaped, Stearns living to give us an erudite account of the real events in Korea from a politi-cal, strategic, and very human level.
