Born in French Catalonia, he became a career officer in 1870. Originally an engineer, he presided over the modernization of the French Army and the first three years of the Great War. After the war, he became a member of the Académie Français. Robert B. Marks holds a Master of Arts degree in War Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada, with a focus on the First World War. He also translated Grandmaison's Training of the Infantry for Offensive Combat, Moltke's Memories and Letters, and the French Decrees of 1913.
