Para Américo Castro, era un atlas equiparable al ALPI de Navarro Tomás: ""Tres profesores jóvenes se han hecho solos el mapa lingüístico de Andalucía, con los métodos del Centro Histórico con esfuerzo heroico"" (Princeton, 1958). Hay capítulos que examinan el español de Canarias, frente a las hablas andaluzas, y el Atlas Lingüístico-Etnográfico de América Central. Los siguientes trabajos abordan cuestiones de geografía dialectal, actitudes lingüísticas, la Andalucía del XVIII y la descripción sincrónica del español entre Andalucía, Canarias y América. Se explora el cambio lingüístico, el contacto de Andalucía y Canarias, el ALEA frente al ALEICan o las actitudes lingüísticas, como la glotofobia. Hay páginas dedicadas al acervo léxico canario y la lexicografía hispanoamericana.
