Overview

"Güstrow - Malchow - Parchim - Plauer See - Krakower See The Mecklenburg Lake District is an unforgettable experience with glittering blue lakes in the midst of lush green forests, embedded in a gentle hilly landscape. The Mecklenburg Lake District was formed more than 20,000 years ago during the last ice age. The glaciers and their melt streams formed a varied end moraine and sand landscape. This resulted in mountain ranges and numerous lakes, which gave southern Mecklenburg the name ""Land of a thousand lakes"". The Müritz and the Plauer See are among the largest. The watershed between the Baltic Sea and the North Sea runs between Klocksin and Alt Schwerin. It ensures that, for example, the Havel and Peene, whose source areas in the Müritz National Park are only a few kilometers apart, flow in different directions. The Havel flows over the Elbe into the North Sea, while the Peene flows into the Baltic Sea. You will regularly come across cities and towns with beautiful and mostly brick town centers and impressive sacred buildings: the pretty small towns of Krakow am See, the port town of Plau am See, the Barlach town of Güstrow and Bützow invite you to linger. There are also many fairytale castles and several monasteries along this route. Mecklenburg's well-known wealth of lakes is particularly evident in the eastern part of the map. The characteristically hilly landscape guarantees you wide panoramas again and again. Several nature parks, such as the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide nature park and the Sternberger Seenland nature park, help to protect the unique landscape. On the Mecklenburg Lakes Cycle Route you can cross the southern part of the map in an east-west direction - via Parchim you get to the Mecklenburg Lake District. The Berlin-Copenhagen long-distance cycle route takes you from Waren (Müritz) towards Rostock. The Hamburg-Rügen cycle path takes you from the Elbe deep into the Mecklenburg interior and makes numerous generous detours on its way to the Baltic Sea coast so that you don't miss out on anything worth seeing. Other important regional routes include the Eldetal, Herrenhaus, Mecklenburg Lakes, Residenzstädte and Warnowtal circular routes, with which large areas of the map can be explored.
