Overview

In pursuit of her dream to be a writer, Nora journeys from her family in Canada after she accepts a job as a journalist in Jamaica and then later, the United States. In the autobiography, the young author recounts her early life and writing career. Only seventeen years old and with just ten dollars in her pocket, Nora sets sail for Jamaica west Indies, and when this new career as a newspaper writer takes an unwelcome turn, Nora ends up in Chicago, where she struggles to find a good job and make it as a journalist and storyteller. Her story serves as a cautionary tale of what may become of a young girl in 1915 left alone in the world. This is a recounting of how the many men of her life tried to encourage, convince and manipulate her to serve their own agendas. Nora makes her way through the many challenges of her life in spite of the people around her, who try to influence and shape her, and she is transformed from a na�ve aspiring writer into a successful strong woman of the world.

Winnifred Eaton (1875-1954) was a Canadian author and screenwriter who published prolifically under a number of names, most predominantly the pseudonym Onoto Watanna. She was one of the first North American writers of Asian descent to publish fiction in English. She would eventually publish over a dozen novels and dozens of short stories and articles.
