Overview

A journey into the art of one of the world's most enigmatic ancient civilizations. From temple to tomb, Mary Ellen Miller explains how and why the Maya made their greatest works and how the modern-day viewer might come to understand them. New archaeological discoveries at Copan, Tikal and Palenque are all included, and the author draws on decipherments in Maya writing to provide interpretation of Maya sculpture and ceramics. Chapters on Maya architecture and the materials of Maya art set the stage for discussions of the sculpture of different time periods and regions, the famous murals at Bonampak, the dramatic findings at Cacaxtla and the painted Maya ceramics of the first millennium AD.

Reviews

Yale Professor and Maya art expert Miller looks at such fundamental questions as the nature of Maya sculptural development, the emergence of regional schools of culture and painting, and how and why Maya art came to focus on the human figure. After an overview of the development of this enigmatic civilization which flourished in the first millennium AD, she describes the significance of the new archaeological discoveries at Copa[ac]n, Tikal and Palenque in Central America, and considers how they have added to our understanding of the evolution of Maya sculpture and ceramics. The result is an authoritative, readable and up-to-date survey that will suit both the student and the traveller. (Kirkus UK)
