Overview

In 1930s Mississippi, Mary Johnson hates the oppressive heat, working on her family farm, and having to attend her minister father's church several times a week. But she loves Mason Carter, her musician boyfriend. Both fantasize about living the high life up north in the big city. When William Bevers, a wealthy old preacher, comes to court her, he promises a life of luxury along with money and status for her family. Mary wants nothing to do with him, but her parents decide for her. Determined to avoid a forced marriage, Mary elopes with Mason to the bright lights of Chicago. But life up north is not the dream they expected. Multiple tragedies push Mary to the brink, and she soon returns home to the very world she tried so desperately to escape. Too numb to stave off the pressure from her father, Mary considers accepting William's proposal. But she soon realizes that life as the preacher's wife might not provide the safety and security she craves.

Author Information

"Though Deborah L. King has been a writer and storyteller her whole life, publishing her first short story at seven years old, she took only thirty-two years to complete the story of Glory Bishop. The novels were published in 2019 and 2021 as Glory Bishop and Glory Unbound. The two-part story tells the coming-of-age of a Chicago teenager growing up in the 1980s. Glory Unbound is a finalist for the CWA 2022 book of the year. Deborah's third novel, Mary Not Broken, is the prequel to Glory Bishop and tells the story of Glory's mother. Deborah loves storms, champagne, old time radio, and '70s blues and soul. As a fiction writer, she loves the work of Octavia Butler, classic Stephen King, Peter David, and the illustrations of Dan DeCarlo. Thanks to an interesting childhood, she's afraid of escalators, bill collectors, and sometimes fresh produce. Along with being a Vulcan and a bread-bender, Deborah enjoys cartoons, baking, photography, and Star Trek. Born and raised in Chicago, she has managed to achieve all of her childhood dreams-artist, teacher, baker, photographer, model, truck-driver, writer-and still lives in the area with her husband and two youngest children. According to her daughter, she has ""literally aced her life!"" Lisa Renee Pitts is an award-winning actress in theater, television, and film, as well as an accomplished audiobook narrator. She has been seen Off-Broadway, in Europe, and in regional theaters across the United States, performing leading roles in such prominent plays as A Raisin in the Sun, Doubt, Waiting for Lefty, Valley Song, and Our Town. Her television appearances include The Shield and Law and Order, and she played the recurring role of Allison Sawyer on the hit family drama Lincoln Heights for the ABC Family Channel. Lisa's audiobook titles include biographies, fiction, nonfiction and children's novels, including Pushkin and the Queen of Spades by Alice Randall, for which she won an AudioFile Earphones Award for excellence in narration. Other notable titles are Left to Tell by Immaculee Ilibagiza, Better Than I Know Myself by Virginia DeBerry and Donna Grant, and My Name Is Not Angelica by Scott O'Dell. Lisa is a graduate of Rutgers University, where she received her B.F.A. in Theater Arts. She lives in Burbank, California."
