OverviewOriginally published in 1901, dedicated to his friend and fellow coaching enthusiast William G. Tiffany, Fairman Rogers' A Manual of Coaching has become the sine qua non of any carriage library. It is the 'rule book' to which all coachmen worthy of the name strictly adhere. Copies of the original edition, a run of 1,500 books, of which 500 were lost by a printing house fire, occupy a special place in their owners' libraries. Recognizing the importance of this work, it is offered here reprinted with care. Replete with the most minute information and detail about every aspect of coaching and driving, this book is nonetheless written in a very clear, lucid style, perhaps the result of Mr. Rogers' experiences in the classroom. There is no challenge reading it. The challenge is in absorbing its exhausted analysis of the sport of coaching; that is, driving four horses put to a drag or road coach merely for the pleasure of it. Although focusing on this high art of driving, a carriage driver of any level can gain knowledge of the history, engineering, and training methods described in its twenty-seven comprehensive chapters. Note: this edition published in 2023 with the blue cover contains quality reproductions of the images and text which have been set with care. Other editions have not been produced with this attention to detail.
