Overview

From the orange groves in Florida in the 1940s to the U.S. Army in the 1950s through the 1980s, J. Paul Montgomery fought prejudice for being a dark-complexioned black man, even within his own family. His U.S. Army service in communications/operations and recruitment took him from Florida to Hawaii, Thailand, Germany, Vietnam, and Korea, as well as several stateside army posts- a career that eventually ended with a diagnosis of depression and post-traumatic stress. This book details his exploits, musings, and heartaches as he makes his journey through a fascinating life.

Author Information

J. Paul Montgomery was born in Clermont, Florida, to a large family that worked the orange groves. His vision of leaving his small town and becoming an airplane pilot led him to join the U.S. Army to make a better life for himself. After twenty-one years in the army and five years as a civilian recruiter, Montgomery became an ordained reverend and founded the nonprofit Churches Organized to Assist (later renamed to Patriarchies/Matriarchies Children's Fund, aka Hero's) to expose black youth to community heroes and provide positive role models for them. As a disabled veteran, Montgomery is now retired. Married, with four children and fourteen grandchildren, he lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife Robbie.
