Overview

Written in a clear and direct style, this is the ideal core textbook for students who seek a thorough understanding of the applications of macroeconomic theory. The book combines theoretical rigour with numerous illustrative examples and engaging policy discussions. This highly-respected author has developed an innovative new approach to teaching macroeconomics, based on combining microeconomic foundations with Keynesian-style short-run policy analysis to build one unified model. Gottfries’ critically-acclaimed and highly relevant approach reinforces learning and makes it easier for students to comprehend, providing the ideal preparation either for work or for further postgraduate study. The book is perfect for the higher-level intermediate macroeconomics courses, as well as offering a potential bridge between undergraduate level study and the step up to postgraduate and research level theory and content. Key features of this book include: - A real-world approach that takes into account the many market imperfections and rigidities that characterize economies in action. - An international approach using examples from a variety of world economies, and the ongoing comparison of US, UK and EU market behaviours. - Theory supported and illustrated by the presentation and analysis of real-world data. - Detailed coverage of both long and short run approaches, and the closed and open economies.
'I found the book very easy to read, the pace was brisk, the contents all reassuringly familiar.' John Driffill, Birkbeck, London
'The general approach is to have an explicit, consistent microeconomic foundation of the macroeconomic analysis of both the short run and long run. This is laudable. It makes this book different from its competitors such as Blanchard and Mankiw... I think there will be a market for this book, particularly universities that emphasise mathematical training and formal microeconomic analysis in their undergraduate programs. Examples are the best universities in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Holland. Probably other countries as well.' Erling Steigum, University of Oslo
'The proposed book will probably be consistent throughout, instead of serving macroeconomics as some separate pieces which are linked in a rather ad hoc-way. For less ambitious faculties, the market [will be the one] that is served now by Carlin and Soskice (OUP) and Sorensen (McGraw-Hill). For ambitious faculties, it may be a replacement for Blanchard, Gaertner (Pearson), Mankiw, or Mankiw and Taylor.' Martin Van Tuijl, University of Tilburg
'I believe the book proposal fits well as an intermediate text in economics at Scandinavian universities which are those I know best. But in fact I think the book will do well many places in Europe, because of its novel and balanced approach.' Christian Groth, Copenhagen University
'This text takes a novel approach in combining a micro foundations structure with an essentially Keynesian policy analysis. In some senses it is therefore a hybrid between the conventional US (micro foundations structure, but Classical policy analysis) and UK (Keynesian structure and analysis) approaches. It is the first text that I have seen that has taken this approach, and is therefore interesting to evaluate... The text is concise and well written. I share with the author misgivings about over-long texts. Students these d

'This is a superb book! It contains a rigorous treatment of the New-Keynesian model combined with illustrative examples and interesting policy discussions. Students will find the book well-written and easily accessible.' Fredrik Andersson, Lund University, Sweden 'This book is an excellent and innovative new textbook for intermediate macroeconomics, where conventional macroeconomics is explained with a deeper emphasis on the role of microfoundations. This allows students to be exposed to modern macroeconomic analysis in a rigorous yet still accessible way. The material is up-to-date with the inclusion of recent economic events, and the text offers very useful examples.' Gianluigi Vernasca, University of Essex, UK What is particularly appealing is that the book succeeds in joining together short- and long-run theory in the same overall model framework based on imperfect competition with wage and price setting market participants. Christian Groth, University of Copenhagen, Denmark
