OverviewGiven the power wielded by 'techno-science', Lyotard fears for our future, and call on us to resist the drift towards 'inhumanism'. If we look around us, however inhumanism is already with us in many forms: medical technology. Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life are three obvious examples. The boundary between humanity and machine is becoming progressively more blurred, and there are many willing to defend this development, regarding it as where our future lies. At stake this debate is our very conception of what it means to be human. Lyotard's question, 'what if what is proper to humankind were to inhabited by the inhuman?', is one with critical implications for us all.
