"* ""The whole work is brought to life by Christie's remarkable, compelling illustrations, which perfectly complement each poem in content and mood. Christie also pays subtle homage to the African-American artists who have gone before him by incorporating hints of the styles of Horace Pippin and Jacob Lawrence in his illustrations. This is a treasure to be read and reread--a splendid work."" -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review * ""Medina's words stand on their own while they honor the tradition established by Hughes. . . Christie's full-page, vibrant illustrations and broad expanses of bold, flat colors and stylized figures invite readers into the world of sharecroppers, ocean liners, and libraries. . . A stunning collaboration."" -- School Library Journal, starred review ""The sliding, syncopated beats and unexpected rhymes are reminiscent of spoken-word poetry. . . Teachers and students will welcome this creative effort, particularly when the text is read with the concluding notes."" -- Booklist ""Medina's solid research and accessible presentation may well lead readers to the work of Hughes himself."" -- Publishers Weekly Best Books of the Year - School Library Journal Notable Books in the Language Arts - National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)"

* This is a treasure to be read and reread--a splendid work. -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review * A stunning collaboration. -- School Library Journal, starred review Here are 14 thoughtful poems inspired by the life of Langston Hughes, with extensive commentary and handsome illustrations. -- The New York Times The events of Langston Hughes's life inspire 14 impressionistic, free-verse poems ... Medina's solid research and accessible presentation may well lead readers to the work of Hughes himself... A standout is the spread Leaving Harlem for Africa, which shows the poet bound for unexplored shores. -- Publishers Weekly [S]elections move beyond biography to celebrate Hughes's passions -- jazz, literature, and the Harlem streets -- and the sliding, syncopated beats and unexpected rhymes are reminiscent of spoken-word poetry...Teachers and students will welcome this creative effort, particularly when the text is read with the concluding notes. -- Booklist [T]his offers a treatment of Hughes's life in a sequence of fourteen poems narrated by Hughes himself. The book devotes several poems to incidents and periods in Hughes's youth, then branches out to his travels, his love of jazz, and his work and philosophy. [T]here is... enthusiasm and energy in [Medina's] lines and ... eloquent turns of phrase ( Harlem is the capital of my world/black and beautiful and bruised like me -- Harlem Is the Capital of My World ). Ultimately, the book's merit lies in that enthusiasm in tasty slices of Hughes's life and quick glimpses of his world, which may lead readers to the man's work itself. -- The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books Medina's choice of the poetic idiom to honor a poet is purely wonderful, and his riveting execution guarantees that it can be absolutely appreciated by even the youngest readers. Hats off too, for illustrator R. Gregory Christie (who also illustrated Medina's Deshawn Days ) and his loose, childlike paintings. Highly recommended. -- Midwest Book Review Notable Books in the Language Arts, National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Bank Street Bookstore Bestseller, Bank Street College of Education Chapman Award - Best Classroom Read-Aloud, PlanetEsme.com Original Art Show, Society of Illustrators 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing, New York Public Library
