Losing A Child To Suicide: A Parents Guide

Overview

""Losing A Child to Suicide: A Parent's Guide"". This book is born from the deeply personal and often isolating experience of navigating the aftermath of suicide. We are Angie and Freddie, a couple in our mid-50s from Peterborough, who, like many, were a normal blended family until the unimaginable happened. In 2018, we lost our son, Dan, to suicide, an event for which nothing could have prepared us, changing our lives forever. In the four years following Dan's death, we struggled with very little support or clear guidance on what our ""new normal"" would be. This profound lack of resources led us to create ""Life After Dan,"" initially a Facebook page, as a way to openly share our experiences. We soon realised that our lived experiences could help others facing similar horrific circumstances. This guide is Dan's legacy, a memorial, and our attempt to make something worthwhile from the most horrendous event, hoping to make the pain even a tiny bit less for someone else. Within these pages, you will find practical tips and emotional support for coping with sudden loss, alongside a guided writing course designed to help you gently navigate grief and remembrance. This is not a guide from healthcare professionals, but rather the outcome of our own journey through grief, offered to help you find your words and your way. We are here to help those often ""forgotten"" in the wake of such a profound loss. A comprehensive resource designed to support individuals experiencing the profound sorrow of sudden bereavement, particularly after a suicide. It aims to provide help, support, and advice based on shared experience, emphasising that grief is unique and that those grieving are not alone. The book is structured into five parts, addressing the complex emotions and practical challenges of grief, exploring how different relationships affect the grieving process, offering coping strategies and avenues for support, and guiding readers toward facing the future while honouring their loved one's memory. Ultimately, its purpose is to be a compassionate guide, offering reassurance and practical guidance through an overwhelmingly difficult time.
