Overview

Canada and England have Sex Offender Registries. The U. S. is the only country giving citizens access to their identity and location via the Internet. This Clinton-era federal initiative in the State of Maine has resulted in sex offenders being murdered and the male population of entire towns in the grip of over-zealous prosecutors, arresting dozens of men for non-existent sex crimes while securing no convictions. This book relates the experience of a man snared in a whirlwind of sex offender hysteria in a state that is aging, conservative, poor and reluctant to accept social change. This may be the clearest example in American history of a provable railroad job in a criminal trial. The book reproduces actual documents and trial transcripts to demonstrate conclusively how core American values like due process under law and respect for civil rights can be burned away through perjured testimony and manipulated evidence. When the goal is conviction at any price, it's poorly-trained police officers and their computer labs, prosecutors, judges - - even defense attorneys - - who bare too much of themselves in this brutally honest book. ABOUT THE AUTHOR A graduate of the University of Maine with advanced studies in English Literature, Jim Logan (now 71) moved from Maine to New York in 1966. That move accompanied a great awakening to liberal social values that included sexual experiences that Jim wrote about with fictional flourish. Decades later his hand-written 500-page manuscript, which Jim imagined might one day become the Great American Novel, instead fell into the hands of police officers and prosecutors with their own notions of literary interpretation.
