Overview

The esteemed Jungian psychologist counsels on how to cope with feelings of failure or regret in the latter half of life and how to open to a more meaningful existence, even if outer circumstances cannot be changed. In Living Your Unlived Life, the renowned therapist Robert A. Johnson, writing with longtime collaborator and fellow Jungian psychologist Jerry M. Ruhl, offers a simple but transformative premise: Our abandoned, unrealized, or underdeveloped talents, when they are not fully integrated into our lives, can become profoundly troublesome in midlife, leading us to depression, suddenly hating our spouses, our jobs, or even our lives. When our unlived lives are brought to consciousness, however, they can become the fuel that can propel us beyond our limitations, even if our outer circumstances cannot always be visibly altered.

Author Information

Robert A. Johnson is a noted lecturer and Jungian analyst in private practice in San Diego, California. He has studied at the Jung Institute in Switzerland and at the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in India. Jerry M. Ruhl, PhD, is a psychologist, teacher, and author. In the first half of life, Jerry was a journalist, and he managed communications for two major corporations. At mid-life he realized he had climbed up the corporate ladder, but it was leaning against the wrong wall. He began studying the works of Joseph Campbell and Carl Jung and observed first-hand spiritual practices in Japan, Bali, Thailand, Nepal, and India. During his time at Pacifica Graduate Institute, where he earned his PhD, Dr. Ruhl developed a holistic model for coping with life-changing accidents and illness. While living in Colorado, he formerly was a trustee of the C.G. Jung Society of Colorado, and more recently he served for more than six years as executive director of the Jung Center of Houston. A psychologist in private practice in Boulder, Colorado, Dr. Ruhl conducts dream groups and presents seminars and workshops across the nation. Walter Dixon is a broadcast media veteran of more than twenty years' experience with a background in theater and performing arts and voice work for commercials. After a career in public radio, he is now a full-time narrator with more than fifty audiobooks recorded in genres ranging from religion and politics to children's stories.
