Overview

""Lifer is an insightful behind-the-curtain look into the life and career of a US Army Infantry paratrooper and a must read for other combat veterans regardless of service.""-Colonel Carl D. Matter, US Marine Corps (Retired) ""...a gripping and inspirational journey, reflecting the resilience and dedication required of our soldiers.""-Major Roberto Lainez, US Army (Retired) Nathan Aguinaga didn't enlist in the Army planning to be a career soldier-a ""lifer""-but the Army had other plans. He entered the world of light infantry in one of the nation's top-tier rapid-deployment military units in the early 1990s and would continue for most of the next twenty years as a part of the famed 82nd Airborne Division. Lifer is the comprehensive account of his career journey as a paratrooper, drill sergeant, Army Ranger, and combat veteran. From the high-tempo daily life of the 82nd Airborne Division to a year spent on the Korean DMZ to time spent as a drill sergeant to the daunting task of successfully completing Ranger School to his time spent in Iraq and even to a support deployment in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Master Sergeant (Retired) Aguinaga tells his unvarnished story of Army life-the trials and tribulations, the joys and sorrows, and the humor found in even the darkest moments of duty.

Reviews

""United States military combat veterans are national treasures-many call them heroes, which is precisely what they are. Lifer is the must read story of one of those great American heroes-Master Sergeant Nathan Aguinaga (Retired)-who, for twenty years, served this great nation as a US Army Infantry paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and a host of other assignments. Highlights of his years of service to our country include a combat tour in Iraq, a year on the Korean DMZ, a tour on the drill field as a drill instructor and more. Lifer is an insightful behind-the-curtain look into the life and career of a US Army Infantry paratrooper and a must read for other combat veterans regardless of service.""-Colonel Carl D. Matter, US Marine Corps (Retired) ""Nate Aguinaga's Lifer is a gripping and inspirational journey, reflecting the resilience and dedication required of our soldiers. His stories are testaments of the enduring spirit and unwavering commitment of our nation's finest."" -Major Roberto Lainez, US Army (Retired) ""Lifer is a richly detailed story of one man's twenty-year career in the US Army, though he never intended to be a lifer. Chip on his shoulder? Big one. Rough and tough? Oh yeah. Polished yeller and screamer? Yup. Exactly the kind of man you want defending our nation and training others to do so as well. His story deeply details the endless training exercises, prepping, parachuting, hiking, diving, crossing rope bridges-doing everything possible-to be prepared to defend our nation and allies in Panama, Iraq, and the DMZ in Korea, among others where he served. The beauty of the story is that you are literally with him every step, push-up, jump, injury, battle, and shot along the way. The book is a great read that will help you better understand and appreciate how much soldiers prepare and train to put their lives on the line for us and each other."" -Bruce K. Berger, Author of Brothers Bound and Fragments: The Long Coming Home from Vietnam ""I believe there is no tougher job than that of a US Army noncommissioned officer (NCO). Being a 'lifer, ' especially in demanding units like the 82nd Airborne Division in a time of war, takes a special kind of person. Nate's story is a must read. Follow him on his journey of love, life, and soldiering. You'll enjoy his humor, humility, and the 'tell it like it is' approach he takes to life and writing. Chute up and turn the page!-Colonel Rob Cambell, US Army (Retired), author of It's Personal, Not Personnel: Leadership Lessons for the Battlefield and the Boardroom, and At Ease: Enjoying the Freedom you Fought For ""Echos of nostalgia. The Army's good, bad, and hilarious.""-Galen D. Peterson, Author of Strike Hard and Expect No Mercy: A Tank Platoon Leader in Iraq, REDCON ONE, and LIGHTING SIX ""What an astounding reflection of military service. Well-written and descriptive, Mr. Aguinaga masterfully tells his story. I have never served in the military; however, this story is told so well that I didn't need to have that prior knowledge to enjoy it. His attention to detail and authenticity are refreshing, allowing the reader to go on the journey with him."" -Mrs. Diana Kiser, EdS, eighth grade ELA teacher ""An amazing description of life in the Army by one of the most influential and dedicated leaders I had the privilege to serve with. Thank you 'Sergeant Augi!'"" -Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Huston, US Army (Retired)
