Overview""John Gardiner's prose is concise and to the point. Redundancies, run-on sentences and embellishments that would bog narratives down have been assiduously avoided. That spareness creates a directness that stimulates listeners to explore the layers surrounding the text... His subjects resonate with the lives of anyone who's ever been caught in a snow storm, enjoyed a hockey game, had the pleasure of sitting down with a good book or simply thought about what transpired over a single day. Respect for the mastery authors such as Hemingway, Wolfe, Steinbeck and other literary giants had for presenting thoughts with impeccable clarity has an obvious influence over his style and it's entirely welcome.""- Brian Hay, Freelance Journalist, Sarnia, Ontario ""John Gardiner's style is reminiscent of Alice Munro, Margaret Laurence and Stephen Leacock among others... He takes the little things in life, that many overlook, and raises them up to a moment of exquisite beauty or pain. His prose is, at times laugh-out-loud funny and, at other times, deeply moving."" - Collett Tracey, English Professor, Carleton University Full Product DetailsAuthor: John F GardinerPublisher: Manor House Publishing Inc Imprint: Manor House Publishing Inc Dimensions: Width: 14.00cm , Height: 1.60cm , Length: 21.60cm Weight: 0.458kg ISBN: 9781998938247ISBN 10: 1998938247 Pages: 270 Publication Date: 03 January 2026 Audience: General/trade , General Format: Hardback Publisher's Status: Active Availability: Available To Order We have confirmation that this item is in stock with the supplier. Lawrence and have been favourably compared to Alice Munro, Charles Bukowski, Raymond Carver and Ernest Hemingway. He calls his short stories ""emotional thoughtscapes"" due to the powerful emotions they evoke in readers. He paints pictures with words. Gardiner has worked mostly in isolation during his writing life, seriously intent on developing a voice that was truly unique and he believes he has done that. He is a short story writer like no other. He has forged his own metal...Born in 1952, Gardiner was raised in the small Ontario town of Hanover during the 1950's and '60's, coming of age during a period of great social change. He played in bands when he was a teen and has continued that tradition into his seventies, only recently announcing that he was stepping back from the rigors of playing bass guitar in a rock 'n' roll band. Gardiner laboured in the community newspaper industry as an editor and publisher for almost 40 years and credits that with really helping him develop both his voice and his style - there is no better training ground for a writer. He has been writing nearly all his life, starting an underground newspaper while in high school. He began to write short stories and other fiction and poetry in earnest in his early 30's and has been on that path since, publishing work around the world over the last 40 years, in literary magazines, large circulation newspapers and books.
