Overview

Iowa natives Richard and John Carey played integral but very different roles in the European Theater of World War II--Jack as an infantryman engaged in heavy combat, and his older brother Dick as a chief clerk of an ordnance company. In this book, the two brothers recount their experiences in the War to End All Wars. Jack's contribution, published posthumously, is taken from letters to friends and family. Dick Carey returned from the war to teach high school English and journalism; he also served as an advisor to school publications. This book continues his story into the postwar years with, The Reasons That I Have Always Loved Teaching. He describes his teaching career through experiences, letters, memos, and even the tributes of his students, whose love and respect for him shine through every word they wrote. Jack and Dick Carey both took many life lessons home from the war, and in this book we are privileged to hear of what they experienced and how it changed them.

Author Information

<p>Richard E. Carey was born in Waverly, Iowa. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army and served in a support role in Europe. Returning to Iowa's John Deere Tractor Works, he met and married Beate Catharine Showers. After earning BA and MA degrees, he began a thirty-year career as a much-beloved high school English and journalism teacher. He retired from teaching in 1980 and spent many years traveling the country with his wife, researching their hobby, genealogy. Beate passed away on August 8, 2010. A lover of history, Richard continues to keep abreast of the events on the worldwide scene and to work on his autobiography, Been There--Done That. John E. Carey--younger brother to Dick--served in the Army infantry during World War II; his division saw heavy combat in the Battle of the Bulge, among other battles. Jack was awarded the Bronze Star medal for meritorious service in Belgium and Germany. Upon leaving the armed forces, he was a respected news editor of the Louisville Times newspaper until his retirement in 1983, after which he became a tutor in literacy. Jack passed away in 2006.
