Overview

This book analyzes and elucidates the view that the purpose of the liberal arts is to offer leadership training and guidelines for success. This professional or managerial tradition of the liberal arts is discussed historically, revisiting three central claims purported by the Ancients to make the point that management and the liberal arts are connected and build off each other to provide a framework for leadership in both domains. This book will appeal to researchers in leadership studies, management, and the liberal arts.

Reviews

'The Liberal Arts of Management is a tour de force. James Maroosis imaginatively and with a superb reading of the Classics offers a most sophisticated view of the liberal arts. Who would have thought that the liberal arts and management could dance so well together!' - Sondra Farganis, New School University, USA 'James Maroosis has achieved both something ancient and something new: the recovery of the essential purpose of liberal education as management and its much-needed role in preparing today's leaders for the complex tasks of a global society. It just so happens that, despite conventional educational thinking, the liberal arts are the cutting edge tools necessary to meet today's challenges. No one is more deeply immersed in the liberal arts tradition, both practical and philosophical, than James Maroosis, and no one combines such learning with an innovative sense of how management is the first and most essential liberal art. The Liberal Arts of Management is an indispensable act of rediscovery. It is a management, leadership, and educational masterpiece.' - Jeffrey O. Nelson, Intercollegiate Studies Institute, USA 'This book provides an original and stimulating approach to the problems of leadership and management by calling upon a seemingly unlikely source: the liberal arts tradition. James Maroosis has convinced me of the soundness and practicality of his approach, and I strongly recommend the book to managers, leaders of all kinds, and anyone interested in the survival of the liberal arts.' - John W. O'Malley, Georgetown University, USA
