OverviewThis memoir chronicles the author's four-year enlistment in the United States Navy from 1977-1981. Kathy Wolf entered the Navy when she was 18 years old and became a hunter of submarines during the Cold War. In her story of that time, she includes many of the letters sent to her from friends and family in her hometown of Toledo, Illinois. Not only do the letters help to tell Kathy's story, they also convey the strong sense of community of the small rural town she grew up in. In addition to the letters, Kathy tells of her journey of discovery in being stationed in four different states including a small island in the Aleutian islands.
