OverviewThis title utilizes a qualitative methods strategy to compare the value of short-term leadership education models to powerful life events. This longitudinal study examines the impact of a leadership education retreat through the eyes of six undergraduate college men. Entry and exit interviews, along with one and two year follow-up interviews were conducted. Cross-case analysis revealed that in every case the leadership identity was challenged and reshaped by a leadership crisis.Longitudinal analysis of the participants' self-reported impact response to the curriculum suggested that with time students attributed improved leadership capabilities less to leadership education than to their own maturation, leadership experiences, and personal development. These results suggest the need for new theoretical and curricular approaches that incorporate potential future crucible experiences and the competing ethical and impersonal demands on student leaders.
