OverviewHaving completed my ""Last Days New Testament"", it came to my mind, no doubt by the Breath of God, why not do a commentary on my favourite book of the Bible--Revelation? At my last church, I preached through the Book of Revelation calling it the ""Now is the Time series."" It ended up being thirty-five sermons and so this commentary is borne out of that series with each chapter following my sermon series. My wish is that you would use this easily readable commentary as a companion to my Last Days New Testament (EDV) and as such unless stated all NT quotes are in my EDV. Because of my experience teaching in the local urban church context in Australia and overseas in a cross-cultural context, this commentary is borne out of much teaching and translation work. The commentary is not highly technical but like the Last Days New Testament, it is accessible and understandable to the lay student who is interested and wanting to ""become ready"" as the last days approach. When I taught Bible translation principles to missionary training candidates in the 1990s, I remember saying to them that a new translation is needed for each new generation because language is ever changing. In languages that can be anywhere from 20 to 40 years. My vision for my new EDV translation was to capture the language of our day in this last generation in the days before Jesus returns, and so this commentary in Revelation has a similar purpose. Bible translation is essentially interpretation, and as such translations are highly vulnerable to the doctrinal stances and biases of the translators. Therefore, one must use many different versions to get different angles in arriving at the original meaning. But the thing is, that should also be true of commentaries. Commentaries are not inspired but in the opinion of the translator, editors or even the publishers sometimes, so one must form one's own convictions in accordance with the Holy Breath. God is the ultimate teacher through His Breath and so each one must diligently search the Scriptures themselves and be reliant on the Breath of Truth. I hope that this commentary is a blessing and thought provoking as you use it as an inspiration for your own personal study and devotions.
