Overview

Language Sampling with Adolescents provides guidelines for analyzing spoken and written language production in adolescents. It is geared toward graduate students and speech-language pathologists who work in the public schools with middle school and high school students (Grades 5-12). The book includes many tables, figures, and practical exercises (with answer keys) to help readers understand how to analyze the content and structure of what adolescents express in different genres: conversational, narrative, expository, and persuasive. Based on formal analyses, the book indicates how the information can be applied to establish functional language goals for adolescents with language disorders. It also explains how to implement intervention activities that are designed to enhance spoken and written language production in adolescents.

Reviews

Adrienne B. Hancock, PhD, Doody's Review Service, (2010): ... Well organized and easy to read and includes charts to help illustrate the author's points. Gail Turner, International Journal of Language and Communication Disorders, (2010): ... An accessible and highly informative guide to eliciting and analysing language samples for a client group whose complex needs may not always be recognized and properly addressed through the use of formal assessment tools alone. One of the main strengths of the book lies in the multidisciplinary and collaborative nature of the assessment and intervention processes described ... Nippold adds breadth to the assessment and intervention processes for young people in school environments so that their functional communication and language needs can be more accurately and successfully met.
