Overview

The author argues that if we take seriously the idea that mind is the brain then it follows logicaly that free will does not exist and that freedom of will is just an illusion. That we are just robots who watch our predestined lives unfold before our eyes. He concludes that there can be no consciousness independent of the brain, and that there is no substantiated self that exists independent of the brain. It is for the same reason that he argues that there can be no such thing as absolute moral responsibility.

Reviews

I am interested to learn about this book. It's the one I'm sure I'll want to read. - Noam Chomsky Whether you agree or disagree with Singh's conclusions, after you have finished reading Singh's book, you will never again think about free will and consciousness in quite the same way. - Richard Hammerud, PhD, Professor of Philosophy at De Anza College It is a book in the tradition of Spinoza, Francis Crick, and Antonio Damasio, and it is a book that will forever change the way you think about the human brain. Richard Anslem: Amazon.com Paul Singh convincingly dethrones three great illusions people believe cherish and defend with a religious passion. These illusions are (Free will, consciousness and the self). Following in the footsteps of Bruce Hood, Antonio Damasio, Stanislas Dehaene and David Eagleman, Paul Singh unleashes a torrent of common sense coupled with the science that concur with the reality that to many seem to be completely counter intuitive.
