OverviewThe Kirchenmusikalisches Jahrbuch 2021 contains seven current research contributions on the history of music from the 16th to the 20th century. Two studies are devoted to works by the composer Orlando di Lasso, on the one hand from the perspective of interconfessional reception, and on the other from the perspective of media history. A musicological-theological contribution explores the understanding of language in music using the example of John 3:16 (Thus God loved the world). Two papers deal with church music under the conditions of totalitarian systems of the 20th century. The potential of Theodor W. Adorno's difficulties with Beethoven's Missa solemnis are explored. Finally, a contribution on compositional specifics in figural masses by South German church composers of the pre-classical period is analytically oriented.
