Overview

English summary: The life and work of the Swiss artist Karl Walser (1877-1943) are as diverse as his interests. He spent 20 years in Berlin. In addition to painting and graphic arts, he devoted himself intensively to book design and worked with renowned publishers. On a trip to Japan in 1908, he recorded impressions that are among the highlights of his work. As a stage designer for Max Reinhardt and Hans Gregor, among others, he experienced and helped shape the reforms in the theater. After the First World War, he settled back in Switzerland. Here he was a sought-after muralist and decorated private and public spaces. Influenced in his early years by the Fin de Siecle and following Impressionist currents, after 1910 he came to grips with expressive tendencies. The Art Nouveau handwriting receded in favor of an open and animated language of signs. In his late work, he favored a classical style of figures, which is especially evident in his wall paintings. The book provides insight into a piece of contemporary history. Karl Walser is the brother of the poet Robert Walser.
